UN: Libyan weapons being smuggled to Syria

New York - The UN Security Council is hearing reports that caches of weapons and ammunition left over from the collapse of Muammar Gaddafi's Libyan regime are being flown and shipped into Syria.

The council heard from its committee on Libyan sanctions of "an increasing number of reported cases of trafficking of arms and ammunition from Libya to the Syrian Arab Republic by sea and air".

The council also heard of "further revealing details of the efforts" made by Gaddafi's younger son, al-Saadi Gaddafi, "and his associates to hide, move and use assets that should have been frozen".

Al-Saadi Gaddafi fled to Niger in 2011 as his father's regime crumbled. He is still under a UN travel ban
